OUR MISSION

OBJECTIVE

To link local livelihoods with aquatic conservation in the Ganga River basin through the Jalaj model for symbiotic linkages between the river and people.

BACKGROUND

The project, initiated by NMCG and WII, started with biodiversity conservation and Ganga rejuvenation efforts, evolving into the Arth Ganga programme, focusing on local livelihoods and conservation through the Jalaj model.

Conservation of Aquatic Species

Conserving aquatic species is essential for ecosystem stability. Through sustainable fishing, marine protected areas, and pollution control, we work to maintain biodiversity. Cooperation among governments, conservation groups, and communities is key to the survival of Ganga's aquatic life.

Livelihood Generation

By engaging local communities in biodiversity conservation and skill development through innovative centers like Jalaj, we aim to create economic opportunities while promoting environmental stewardship. These efforts enhance local well-being and build resilience in the Ganga River basin communities.

Resilient Community

We seek to empower local communities along the Ganga River basin by enhancing women's roles in ecological and economic areas. Through volunteers like the Ganga Praharis and livelihood centers such as Jalaj, we enable communities to manage their environment effectively, fostering resilience and informed resource decisions.

Promoting Sustainable Development

We are addressing current environmental issues while promoting sustainable practices by involving local communities in biodiversity conservation and Ganga rejuvenation. The Jalaj model illustrates how combining livelihood enhancement with conservation can empower communities and protect natural resources.

Discover a unique collection of handmade treasures crafted with love by our Ganga Prahari Self Help Groups (SHGs) and individuals. The products range from edibles (made of traditional grains including millets), stationary items, clothing, home décor etc.  Each item at Jalaj is a testament to value skills, pledge to revive & restore tradition, art, culture and support the native riverside communities who are the guardians of the rivers. Every little effort of ours and every small contribution of yours will help in reducing the direct dependency of these communities thus conservation the vulnerable freshwater ecosystem.
