Conservation Status
Geographical Distribution
The Indian narrow-headed softshell turtle is found in South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It is found in the river basins of the Indus, Ganga, Godavari, Coleroon, Mahanadi, and Padma rivers. Distribution, while extensive, can be irregular and restricted. This may be the result of both its large body size as well as specialized habitat requirements.
General Information
Indian narrow-headed softshell turtle breed multiple times during a breeding season, which typically occurs between August and September or February and May, depending on the location. Due to its secretive nature, little is known about its reproductive habits. However, females must come ashore onto sandy beaches to excavate holes and lay clutches of eggs. They dig flask-shapes nests with an egg chamber, deposit the eggs and then cover them with sand for incubation. The incubation period lasts for 40 to 70 days. Sexual maturity is determined by both the mass and length of an individual. The species has a lifespan of 70 – 140 years. The ideal habitat for this turtle includes moderate to large rivers, preferably with sandy bottoms and low turbidity. It inhabits deep rivers, streams, large canals, lakes and ponds with muddy and sandy substrates, often favouring turbid waters. As an omnivore, it feeds on a variety of food sources, including mollusks, insects, fish, amphibians, waterfowl, carrion and aquatic plants.
Threats
- Habitat degradation due to mining, dredging and fishing.
- Drowning in fishing nets.
- Illegal poaching and trading.
- Exploitation for meat and medicinal purposes.
