Geographical Distribution
The spotted barb is a small freshwater fish species found in streams and rivers across Southeast Asia, particularly in India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. In India, it inhabits the upper reaches of major rivers such as the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Godavari and Cauvery, and it is also found in the Mahanadi River system in Odisha. Additionally, the species is present in the Mekong River basin, spanning Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

General Information
The spotted barb spawns during dawn in open water, scattering its eggs over substrates without showing any parental care. Typically found in slow-moving or still waters such as streams, rivers and ponds, this species can thrive in both clear and murky conditions. In the wild, it prefers vegetated areas with submerged plants that provide food and shelter. Known for its adaptability, the spotted barb inhabits a variety of environments, including natural and man-made habitats such as rice paddies, canals, reservoirs and stagnant water bodies, as well as sluggish-flowing canals. It is commonly found below waterfalls in isolated mountain streams and on small islands with few other freshwater fish species. An omnivorous fish, it feeds on small aquatic insects, crustaceans, and plant matter in the wild, while in aquariums, it thrives on a varied diet of pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms. Popular in aquariums, the spotted barb is prized for its attractive coloration and peaceful temperament.
